Are you collecting email addresses on your website?
First, I don't know if you have the flexibility to manage your own website. If you took my Girlfriend's Guide to 30 Days Social Media Challenge, you know that I think every small business owner should be managing his/her own website. It took me 2 hours to come up with the idea, create the graphics for it and then design the web pages to complete the opt in! Pheww! Let me share the details with you here.
STEP 1 - An opt in means a fan, follower or blog reader is going to give you their email address in exchange for something of value that you provide them. This is usually in the form of a simple PDF document. I created a mini ebook for my reader once they opt in and give me their email address. The topic I came up with is The Top 5 Things Your Website Should be Doing.
*NOW YOU - What 'thing' can you give away that has enough value that people will hand over their email address? If you're a photographer, maybe the Top 5 Image Storage Solutions would work. If you're a real estate agent, maybe the Top 10 Clutter Reducing Strategies makes sense.
STEP 2 - Now that you have a idea of a great giveaway, you have to actually create that giveaway. If you are creating a document, you can create that in Google Docs or some other document platform, and then save it as a .PDF for your reader to download. You'll also want some kind of graphic to go along with the PDF, so you can blog and advertise about your amazing opt in. I used PicMonkey to create a graphic I used in a blog post and Facebook ad. Here it is below.
*NOTE you can also just add a tab to your website, if you're not tracking ads or multiple opt ins. My other opt in is promoting done-for-you images, rather than this checklist. Also, you may at this point want to track your link with a link shortener like Bit.ly.
STEP 4 - Once they click on the 'Download Checklist' button, it has to take them somewhere, right? Because we haven't yet collected an email address yet, and that is the whole purpose of providing this awesome content. So, we have to provide a form for them to fill out. This is what it looks like once they click the button.
*NOW YOU - Do you have the ability to create an opt in of this kind? Your email list is essential to your business. Some reports I've heard tell us that up to 90% of a person's income comes directly from their email list. Why?
Well, if people have opted in to your news/tips/giveaways, they've given you a show of trust. If you keep producing valuable information they can use, they'll keep soaking up all of your value and may be more willing to part with dollars at some point.
So get your website ready to capture those emails before the New Year begins! Ready. Set. Go!
